KRISTEN McNAMARA (KMAC)

 

Kristen McNamara (KMAC) is a singer-songwriter, powerhouse vocalist and multi-creative artist whose unconventional career has taken her from national television and Nashville to stadium crowds, songwriter festivals and the intimate stages of Key West.

 

Music was woven into Kristen’s life from the beginning, much of it through her grandmother, Shirley McNamara, a gifted pianist, singer and music teacher who once traveled the country in a college sextet called The Shirleys, where, remarkably, all six women were named Shirley. She became one of Kristen’s greatest teachers and guiding lights, inspiring her lifelong desire to keep the spirit and magic of music alive.

 

Kristen began performing professionally at just 11 years old. Her early career took her from performing multiple shows a day in a Disney-produced show in Branson to working with, performing alongside and sharing stages with artists and industry figures including Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Jason Aldean, Naomi and Wynonna Judd, Old Dominion, Cher, Big & Rich, Lonestar, Diamond Rio, Montgomery Gentry, Glen Campbell, Rod Stewart, Adam Lambert, Akon, Rickey Minor and Dorian Holley, among others.

 

She has performed for audiences as large as 72,000 with the NFL, worked with the MLB and U.S. military, and performed at legendary songwriter rooms including The Bluebird Cafe. Her original song “We All Bleed” was featured on Syfy, and she provided musical consulting for Sony Pictures’ Burlesque.

 

Her national television career began with Arsenio Hall on Star Search in 2003. She later became a finalist on Nashville Star alongside Chris Young, where she performed with Jason Aldean, and competed on American Idol during the Adam Lambert season. Years later, that chapter came full circle when Kristen opened for Adam Lambert at the Key West Amphitheater, bringing two very different journeys from the same Idol season together again on the tiny island Kristen now calls home.

 

But Kristen’s career has never followed a conventional map.

 

Originally from California, her journey carried her through Nashville, Los Angeles and New York before she discovered Key West through the Key West Songwriters Festival, fell in love with the island and made it home.

 

Having entered the music industry so young, Kristen spent much of her early life learning how to be a singer. She had the voice, the range and years of experience, but Key West gave her something the industry couldn’t: a life to sing from.

 

Love, loss, adventure, betrayal, friendship, community and starting over gave new meaning to the songs she sang and the ones she began to write. Performing face-to-face with audiences night after night helped her discover who she was beyond the voice. She had spent years learning how to sing. In Key West, she found something to say.

 

With a four-octave vocal range, Kristen discovered that having all those notes was only the beginning. For her, singing is much like painting: if the colors are there, she wants to use them all. The soaring notes, the quiet ones, the laughter and the tears all belong to the same palette. The voice may be the instrument, but human connection is the art.

 

Musically, Kristen draws from country, pop, rock and Americana, combining the power and emotional storytelling of the singers who shaped her with the colorful world she discovered in the Florida Keys. Her voice is equally at home soaring through a powerhouse vocal performance or pulling an audience into the quietest line of a song.

 

Key West began finding its way into her songwriting as well. The ocean, sea life and free-spirited character of the island brought a new sense of whimsy to her work, where pirates, gypsies, mermaids and mystical imagery became metaphors for freedom, adventure, love and finding your own way. Among those songs is “Duval Street,” a crowd favorite that has become one of the defining songs of her Key West chapter.

 

The island also held some of Kristen’s hardest and most transformative chapters. Between the storms and the turquoise water, she found a deeper purpose for her storytelling: turning what she has lived and overcome into music and art that might help someone else navigate their own journey.

 

That creativity extends beyond music. Kristen is also a painter, filmmaker and visual artist whose artwork can be found throughout Key West, including the stage mural she designed, built and hand-painted at Ocean Key Resort’s Sunset Pier.

 

Through every unexpected turn, Kristen kept singing, writing, performing and creating. Her story is a reminder that a dream doesn’t have to unfold the way you imagined, or look like anyone else’s, to still be worth pursuing.

 

In 2026, Kristen performed at both the Key West and Annapolis Songwriters Festivals, continuing an important thread throughout her career alongside her longtime affiliation with BMI as a songwriter. Her performances and songwriting have also begun drawing renewed attention from Nashville, bringing her story full circle as the music industry encounters not simply the young singer who first arrived there years ago, but the artist she became along the way.

 

Today, Kristen’s music carries pieces of every place she has been: California beginnings, Nashville songwriting, years spent on stages across the country and the saltwater soul of Key West.

 

After nearly three decades of performing, she is still becoming.

 

And perhaps that has been the story all along.
